The University of Bedfordshire was created in 2006 by an amalgamation between Luton University and De Montfort’s teacher training campus. It has a major campus based in the centre of Luton, which is home to a £5.5 million Media Arts Centre and a £7.8 million Learning and Resource Centre. The Bedford campus, 20 miles away and in a rural area just outside Bedford, operates three faculties which are Education, Sport and Tourism. All the courses are vocationally oriented.
The Luton and Bedford campuses have a society, whereas the much smaller Aylesbury does not. Both societies organise social events and activities.
London is only a short train journey away from both Bedford and Luton (but be careful, you don’t get stranded by missing the last train). Even better, with Luton airport on your doorstep, you are a cheap no-frills flight away from Europe’s major gay centres and party islands – Berlin, Sitges, Lesbos, Gran Canaria and so on. Luton’s gay scene is known to be vibrant but small and is made up of a handful of gay pubs.
